History of the Wasteland Empty Part I: The Golden Age

Post by The Powers That Be Thu Dec 19 2013, 19:39

At a certain point, technological advancements had begun to take off at a rapid rate over the course of a few decades. As great as it was, there was some grumblings about traditions and magic being phased out. Though some voiced thoughts that efforts should be made to merge the two together before it became too late to do so, they were overlooked in the long run. Before long, seeds of division began to take root among the populace, and soon they became divided between those who wished to remain in the old traditions and magic, (known as the Traditionalists) and those looked to the future and technology, (known as the Ministers of Science).

As time progressed, the Ministers of Science forged onward, pushing the Traditionalists out of sight and out of mind. As tensions between the two sides mounted, this golden age was soon to be tarnished with the discovery that a large meteorite was hurtling towards the planet, calculated to make impact within a few short years.

Despite the mutual sectarian tensions, the two sides unanimously agreed that they were having none of that sass, and so they began to hastily devise a way to make the meteoroid no longer a problem. Wishing to usurp the limelight from the Ministers, the Traditionalists proposed making some kind of spell to destroy or alter the meteor's trajectory, whereas the Ministers planned to utilize a powerful missile to neutralize the falling star entirely, if not knock it off course.

This divide of opinion caused a large debate about which approach to take, but because the science side was able to finish their solution first, they got the go ahead to carry out their plan. The missile was deployed and it stuck the meteor just as they anticipated, causing the object's trajectory to miss the planet, but not at a cost.

Though the missile did indeed hit its target, it also sheared off a generous chunk, of the meteor, which proceeded to gracelessly break up in the atmosphere and began to hail down on the planet like buckshot.

The meteorites caused considerable damage, leaving most of the world rocky and barren, ruining once beautiful landscapes. The sea level rose considerably from the impacts, flooding forests and washing away below-sea level settlements. Plains and fields were rendered into rocky and ashen wastelands, and once white clouds are now laden with ash and dust that had risen from the earth, giving them a coarse and hard texture. To this day, rain from these clouds still contain traces of silt and dirt, giving it a murky appearance.

History of the Wasteland Empty Part III: Aftermath

Post by The Powers That Be Thu Dec 19 2013, 19:41

Now, the surviving Traditionalists weren't entirely pleased with the result of the missile and the collateral damage it wrought, thus the "I told you so"s commenced, not to mention that they rubbed in the fact that they were confident that their solution wouldn't of caused so much destruction. In retaliation to the derision, the Ministers of Science promptly puffed their chest out and told the Traditionalists to eat shit. As one could guess, the Traditionalists weren't too happy about that proverbial slap to the face, so they chose to retaliate by starting a war with the Ministers. The war raged for twelve years, and began to die down when both sides began to realize how little the conflict was helping their current situation. So the two sides agreed to a ceasefire and began to work together to make life in this new world suck less.

History of the Wasteland Empty Part IV: A Tense Alliance

Post by The Powers That Be Fri Dec 27 2013, 12:24

Over the span of twenty years, the Traditionalists and the Ministers of Science formed an uneasy alliance, doing their best to suppress their mutual resentments and worked together to try and make repairs to the damaged world they called home. They formed two project groups, one that was tasked with rebuilding communities in the new lands with what already existed, (Project Phoenix) and another that was tasked with developing new means of acquiring food, power, and water (Project Embryo).

The efforts Project Phoenix resulted in the forming of settlements such as the Iron Sea, Epicenter, and Last Resort, as they largely were build from what remained from the old world.

The efforts of Project Embryo resulted in developing means of acquiring drinkable water in salty marshes of the Boglands, as well as the forsakable climate of Ashen Agony. For the Boglands, Embryo created the phytosac, a plant that converts saltwater into freshwater, which is stored inside the cavities of its body. (An interesting note about the water stored withing these plants is that it has a taste akin to cucumber, for some reason.) For Ashen Agony, the members of Project Embryo constructed machines called harvesters, which drew water out of the soil, as well as any moisture that was in the air. Though these machines were a critical success, they would often make less-hardy vegetation difficult to grow.

Project Embryo and Project Phoenix also collaborated to install wind turbines and refurbish a large mining compound in Ashen Agony, both of which made it possible to provide power to the new settlements of the wasteland. The two groups also worked together to found Metro-Polis and Silver Lining, both of which benefited from the power that the that was produced.

History of the Wasteland Empty Part V: Hidden Agenda

Post by The Powers That Be Fri Dec 27 2013, 21:31

While these two Projects were in development, there were members of both of the Traditionalists and the Ministers of Science that splintered from the objectives of Embryo and began to research to meteorites that were acquired as the Projects move along. The Ministers of Science opted to do their research in an abandoned hydroelectric plant, whereas the Traditionalists opted to do their research in a small compound tucked away in Ashen Agony

The Traditionalist group of researchers discovered that by certain means of manipulation, fragments of the meteorites can be used to amplify magic. As they continued to press forward in this vein of research, they realized the purer the samples of meteorite were, the more their magic abilities could be amplified. At the same time however, it was discovered that prolonged exposure to the meteorite fragments would result in cognitive and physiological deterioration, despite the increase in power. These findings were reflected in the test subjects they experimented the purified samples on; their skin had become like paper, their veins turned black, their bodies became anemic in nature and their minds had become borderline feral. While some of the subjects died off from their deformities, others managed to escape their confinements when the researchers attempted to euthanize them. Realizing that such effects would be devastating, the remaining researchers hid away their findings before abandoning their compound, rejoining their comrades in the Phoenix and Embryo Projects.

Elsewhere in the Boglands, the Ministers of Science had delved into researching the meteorite fragments as a power source for machinery. At least, that's how it started. When one of the model generators the researchers constructed had its focusing lens maladjusted, it released an intense beam of energy that managed to burn through  the wall of the testing room. While they were repairing the generator, they found that the runoff from the generators they made had caused mutations in the flora surrounding the old hydroelectric plant. Thus, Project Hydra was born. While one division continued looking into using the meteorite fragments as a power source, the other two sects of the project looked into developing energy weapons and mutating the local flora and fauna to create bioweapons. How far this project went remains uncertain, as the researchers vanished around the fifth year of their work. Not even the other Ministers were aware of where their fellow scientists went. All that remained of their presence was  heavily-degraded generators, some of the less-important lab equipment, and a pandemic of mutations that had begun to affect creatures and vegetation outside of the Boglands. Everything else surrounding the work of Project Hydra was gone.

History of the Wasteland Empty Part VI: The Road Ahead

Post by The Powers That Be Fri Dec 27 2013, 21:45

Now, nearly ninety years later from when these projects started, the Ministers of Science and the Traditionalists are but a faded memory of a time period long gone. However, the legacies they left behind through their efforts to reconstruct and adapt to the world around them lives on, as many of the settlements they developed have grown and improved considerably from when they since began. Life for the inhabitants of this world may never be the same as it once was, but maybe that would be for the best.
